I got Linux running on my old 3rd generation iPod tonight:

We’ve been interested in getting this going for a couple of reasons:
- Dom is interviewing people as they walk the lake, and so she needs a digital dictaphone to record the conversations (she has already blogged about this).
- Using open source software and recycling existing hardware is another step closer to achieving a more holistic approach to production that Dom addressed in the previous post.
- Running Linux allows us to circumvent the Apple firmware’s intentional crippling of the iPod’s recording capabilities, allowing us to record at a decent sampling rate, and without a proprietary add-on accessory.
